A True Social Life

I think that today's society is very influenced and dependent upon social networking devices. Such as facebook, twitter, texting, email, etc. I'm guilty of this as well. I also believe that our generation is one that is totally dependent upon these things. Now days, when someone has arrived at your house to pick you up they will text you "I'm here" instead of knocking on the door, saying hi to whoever is home and then be on your way. Even though there are so many benefits, advantages, and just interesting things about the social media, I find it pretty sad that it has become such a major part of everyones life. For example, I know a lot of teens will ask out the person they like over texting or maybe even facebook, and in a few years from now that might be the most romantic way to be asked out, but what ever happened to doing something so special in person? Teenagers especially depend and thrive off of the internet. They can read summaries of a book they need to read for english instead of actually reading the entire thing, they can google the answers to homework questions. There's just so many things that one can do without even thinking for themselves. I'll admit I do all of this from time to time. The internet is a pretty big part of my life and I guess as years go on it'll only continue to grow. I just wish sometimes that it wasn't so addicting or that it just all stopped for a day, just to see what things would be like. I wish that there were more face to face conversations instead of just texting. I think that there are just somethings that are meant to be said in person. The whole point of this post I guess was just to say that yes our generation is pretty big on internet and texting and all of that, but I think that because we're so intrigued by it that we miss out on having a real social life.

  1. Bridget, this seems like a very relevant issue right now. As a teacher, I get frustrated sometimes by how easy it is for students to read summaries and download papers. I understand the internet and texting are your predominant forms of communication and research, but it does seem sad that we're losing the personal element. Thoughtful post; just watch punctuation and maybe break into smaller paragraphs with a more structured organization.

  2. I agree about how the internet is playing such a big part in our lives, and we have definitly made texting a huge way of communication. I just hate how google always copies my homework.

  3. i agree 100% with your beliefs of our society. everyone nowadays is completely dependent on electronics to do the talking for us. ive found in personal situations that this can lead to real life being completely awkward, as if you can't say what you want to in person. id much rather talk to someone in person and make plans in text, though that can also be very complicated when dealing with specific details. itd be nice to see the social world take a turn for the better, but with the way it looks now as opposed to five years ago, simply put: we're screwed.
